Feb 10th, Scaravelli Cup, volunteers needed! Feb 05-2007, Update by Tim Juckes
This weekend is the first big race event of the season at Wentworth, the K1 Scaravelli Cup. As usual, we intend to put on a great event for our racers and all our visitors, and that means getting everyone who can help to step up and do whatever they can.
On FRIDAY, beginning at 1:00 p.m., we will be setting up some of the safety fencing for the race. If you can help Friday, please let me know as soon as possible, and I will let John Hardy (Chief of Course) and Damian Byrne (Chief of Race) know.
On SATURDAY morning, bright and early, we will be setting up the remaining safety fencing and making the corral. We also need volunteers to be on hand throughout the day to rake and side slip. After the races are over, we can always use help tearing the course down and returning all the equipment to storage. If you can help with any of these activities, please let me know.
We are still looking for volunteers to help on Saturday with various tasks, including gate keeping. If you can help, please let me know what you can do, and I pass on your information.
Thanks to all our volunteers!

Nova Scotia Alpine Ski Team Named for Canada Games Jan 19-2006, Update from Julie Ann Wilton
No snow? No problem. Nova Scotia’s alpine ski team has had to be creative, but ten athletes are ready to head for the hills in Whitehorse, Yukon, at the 2007 Canada Winter Games from Feb. 23 to March 10.
A summer training trip to Switzerland, and various races in Quebec and Alberta have helped the team prepare. They will compete this weekend in Martock, Nova Scotia, and in upcoming races in Ontario, leading up to the Games.
Coached by Carl Beaudoin of Dartmouth and Emily Boudreau of Halifax, and managed by Julie Ann Wilton of Bedford, each athlete will compete in Super G, Giant Slalom, and Slalom events at the Canada Winter Games. The final team is as follows:
James Boudreau, Halifax
Emily Burns, Upper Falmouth
Catherine Hart, Halifax
Nicola Hughes, Halifax
Colin MacPherson, Big Pond, Cape Breton
Garrett McLeod, Wolfville
Jeffrey Oland, Halifax
Lydia Stevens, Chester
Natalie Vincent, Porters Lake
Brendan Wilton, Bedford
Team Alternates:
Lauren Steeves,Fall River
Jarek Strecko St Margaret’s Bay
The alpine ski team was picked a year in advance of the Games, which allowed for an extended preparatory program, including extensive individualized dryland training programs, as well as mental preparation.
Emily Boudreau is one of two apprentice coaches on Team Nova Scotia, selected as a participant in the Women in Coaching Apprenticeship Program, co-sponsored by the Coaching Association of Canada and Nova Scotia Health Promotion and Protection.
Team Nova Scotia 2007 has 290 members - 213 athletes, 36 coaches, 23 managers, three artists and 15 mission staff. See the
team’s website for the latest information on Team Nova Scotia.
The Canada Games is the country's largest amateur multi-sport event. More than 3,600 athletes, coaches and managers will gather in Whitehorse to compete for a total of 1,122 medals in 22 sports.

First race of the year! Jan 18-2007, Update from Nigel Loring

First race of the year! Fourteen Wentworth races made the long trip up to Mt. Farlange in northern New Brunswick last weekend for the first races of the year in Atlantic Canada. Poley Mtn. was supposed to host the weekend series, but insufficient snow which also was responsible for the previous weekend’s postponement, ultimately forced the move north where conditions had not been quite so warm. The race crew and staff at Mt. Farlange did a fantastic job getting the track and race ready for the near ninety competitors that attended.
On Saturday, with light snow and falling temperatures, Wentworth racers made good on their pre-season preparations with Kirsten Williams finishing 6th overall after a so, so first run. Canada Games Team (CG) member, Lauren Steeves was right behind her in 7th after a timing error forced her to re-start at the end of the first run. Katie Scissions and Olivia Verge rounded out the top 20 in 16th and 19th respectively. On the boy’s side, CG Team Jeff Oland and Jerek Strecko almost owned the podium with a 1, 3 finish. Ben Rubarth after a solid first run struggled in adjusting to the much tighter second course set and slipped to 10th overall.
Sunday’s slalom was very cold with morning temps in the -20s. Once again Kirsten Williams was on her game and laid down two terrific runs to capture a silver medal in the overall standings. J1 racer Chelsea Hoyt who was close after the first run made a critical mistake in the flush near the end and was out. Katie Scissions was consistent all weekend, cracked the top 15 in 14th place, followed by K2 teammate Sarah Hoyt in 18th. Lauren Steeves could only manage a 19th after a disastrous first run but fired it up in the second with the second fastest time that run.
Jeff Oland also struggled in the first run of the boy’s slalom, but came back with an impressive second run to make it onto the podium with a bronze medal. It was a heartbreaking day for Jerek Strecko who had demolished the first run and was in the overall lead starting the second run only to loose his timing on the 4th gate and falter - ultimately slipping down to 8th. Alternatively, K2 racer Gavin Rubarth had an awesome day and a personal best. Starting 38th, Gavin moved up 26 spots to finish 12th overall!
The SRT’s next stop will be at Martock, this weekend for two slalom races at the annual Founders Cup.

WSRC January 2007 Newsletter Jan 05-2007, Update from Brian Strecko

Further to the issuance of our Club's January 2007 newsletter earlier today, I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of our Club I would like to apologize for the joke and cartoon content of the newsletter. It is in very poor taste and does not represent the position of our Club and that of the balance of our Board. I have discussed this with our Communication's Director and I assure you that this will not happen again. I would like to thank you in advance for your understanding and patience.
Best Regards,
Brian Strecko,

Amqui Training Camp Report Jan 02 -2006, Update from Nigel Loring
The Senior Race Team finished up its second pre-season camp at Val d'Irene, Quebec on the 31st of December. Four cold days (-10 to -15 (-24 with the wind chill))
of training with good overall snow coverage (only a few pebbles) made for lots of runs and solid improvements by all twelve attending members. Assistant coach, Jeremy Law, who has been at this camp during the past number of seasons remarked how valuable this particular trip has been for Wentworth racers to get up to full speed before the first races of the season. After skiing from 9-3 each day, the group continued focusing on team building exercises, committing to a number of seasonal goals (see below) and team building exercises like the human pyramid (see photo). Most of team will be competing at the first races of the season on January 6 & 7 at Poley Mtn., NB before returning to Ski Wentworth for home training the following weekend.

Snow Wars Dec 20-2006, Update from Nigel Loring

You may be thinking that global warming is winning the battle with old man winter, but many ski areas have taken matters into their own hands and made sliding possible even when Jack Frost is taking an untimely southern holiday. Mont Ste. Anne, just half an hour northeast of Quebec City, is one of those areas leading the resistance. Enough so that they could welcome thirteen of Wentworth’s Senior Team racers last week for their annual early season training camp. Artificial snow conditions on the north facing slopes were really quite good and the group had 5 solid days of ski improvement focusing on slalom drills and two sessions of giant slalom with close to full length courses. Assistant coach, Ian Beaudoin and new head coach Nigel Loring made good use of the racers time off the slopes as well with daily ski tuning, dryland and video sessions. By the end of the camp, the racers were spent, but anxious to get to the next planned camps (December 27-30), at Ski Wentworth for some and Val D’Irene in Amqui, QC for others. Both ski areas are currentl y closed, but cold weather the week before Christmas may give Wentworth’s snowmaking arsenal the time it needs to get a few slopes open in time. Amqui on the other hand has no snow making, but a major snow fall is expected on the 25th.
Unless you too have been wintering south for the past 20 years or so, snow making is a must for ski areas and skiers alike to have a fighting chance.
Stay tuned to www.wentworthracing.org for updates on next weeks plans including the status of scheduled Snow Stars and K1 camps, also set to begin on the 27th

AGM Update November 18 -2006, Update from Brian Strecko
Our November 8th AGM was well attended by 30+ Club members. I had the opportunity to recap our extremely successful 2005-06 season. It was a season that should be dedicated to our Club's unbelievable, dedicated volunteers. Our volunteers donated countless hours of time & energy, fundraised thousands of dollars, hosted the best run races in the Maritimes and provided excellent leadership and vision to the benefit of our Club. It was also a season that saw our athletes perform at an extremely high level once again despite less than favourable snow conditions. Kate Wilton, Jarek Strecko, Tim Robinson & Michael Hardy, 4 out the 6 Nova Scotia K2 athletes, represented our Club at the K2 Nationals held at Mont Tremblant last March. James Boudreau, Colin MacPherson, Brendan Wilton, Jeff Oland, Jarek Strecko, Catherine Hart, Natalie Vincent & Lauren Steeves earned 8 of the 12 2007 Nova Scotia Canada Games spots and will be heading to Whitehorse in March 07. These are phenominal achievements and our Club is extremely proud of these athletes. Keep an eye out for them at Wentworth this season and wish them well. Our Club finished the year in a strong financial position and with our 2006-07 Operating budget in place. We also finished the year with a well stocked equipment inventory having made significant investments throughout the 2005-06 year.
Our By-Laws have now been officially updated and approved by our membership. We will be posting them on our web site shortly.
We held Board Elections and our 2006-07 Board is made up of the following volunteers:
  • President: Brian Strecko
  • Past President: Tom Hart
  • VP: Heather Hoyt
  • Secretary: Helen Steeves
  • Treasurer: Pat Daly
  • Communications: Tim Juckes
  • Senior Team Rep: Kathy Vincent
  • K1 Team Rep: Damian Byrne
  • NG Rep: Brian Carter
  • Director at Large: Michael Healy
  • Director at Large: Dawn Scissons
  • Director at Large (Long Range Planning/ Equipment): Ron Steeves
  • Coaches Rep: Emily Tregunno

I want also like to extend a huge thank you to Conny Allen (retiring Communications Director), Julie Ann Wilton (retiring Director at Large) and to Chris Robinson (retiring Director at Large - Long Range Planning/ Equipment) for their multiple years of service on our Board.
Our new Board will be meeting shortly as we continue to ramp up for our fast approaching 2006-07 season. See you in the Valley of Snow !

WSRC Program Fee Increase October 12 -2006
At September's meeting of the WSRC board of directors a review of the clubs fee structure revealed that increases were necessary for the club to sustain quality services to its membership. Rising insurance costs, which many organizations and families have had deal with recently are the primary reason for the jump in fees. According to Alpine Ski Nova Scotia these fees are expected to double this season. Furthermore it was discovered that the club's entry level programs insurance and operational costs where disproportionate low to what the senior team, K1 2-day Nancy Greene Race members were carrying. Our Nancy Greene 1-day and 2-day along with our K1 1 day program fees have remained at the 05/06 levels for several years. In that time the entry level program has evolved from a 6 week program to a 9 week one.
One of the goals of the WSRC is to work hard to keep the sport affordable to as many participants as possible, but to apply necessary fees in a fair and equitable manner. Unfortunately in this case, the club could not absorb the inflation and although the board of directors are exploring new fundrasing projects, it ultimately must pass on these increases to the end user.

2006/07 applied fee increases are as follows:
Membership up $25 per family
NGSL (1 day up $60 per child
NGSL (2 day) up $75 per child
NGR (2 day up $20 per child
K1 (1 day) up $50 per child
K1 (2 day) up $5 per child

Dryland training aims for higher ground! October 12 -2006, Update from Nigel Loring
Wentworth senior team dryland training has been underway for the last month with two hour workouts on Sunday mornings (9-11) and Wednesday evenings (7-9). New and returning K1 team members are invited to join in each Sunday. Everyone is reminded to bring a water bottle and appropriate workout attire. A good preseason dryland program is vital for racers at all levels to be adequately prepared for the rigors of winter training and will improve your results on the slopes.

Wentworth Ski Racing Club Appoints New Program Director / Head Coach September 12-2006, Update from Brian Strecko
The Wentworth Ski Racing Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Nigel Loring as its Program Director / Head Coach for the upcoming 2006/07 season. As a former competitor and later coach for the Wentworth club during the mid to late 1980’s, Nigel embarked on an unlikely career path for someone from Nova Scotia. Deciding early on that coaching was to be his life, he dedicated himself to an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology at Dalhousie University in Halifax, while at the same time quickly advancing through the professional levels of the Canadian Ski Coaches Federation becoming level 3 coach by the time he was just 21 years of age. Since then, he has been at the helm of several successful ski-racing organizations in Ontario, British Columbia and most recently in the United States at Mt. Hood Meadows in Oregon.

For the past year, Nigel had been working closely with the US Ski Team on developing a new position in Europe, but it wasn’t until early summer that funding cuts put that role on the back burner for the 06/07 season. Nigel suddenly found himself hard pressed to fill the large hole in his career plans. By late July, Wentworth had heard that Nigel was available and over the next few weeks put together a proposal that was attractive and beneficial on all sides.

The Wentworth Ski Racing Club offers a variety of competitive skiing programs for ages six through adult. Last season the club had over 130 participants and is considered the largest in Nova Scotia. The club’s previous senior lead coach, Carl Beaudoin was appointed the 2007 Canada Games Coach for Nova Scotia last spring and for obvious reasons could not continue with Wentworth for this season.

The vacancy that Nigel is filling is a good fit on both sides. With his near 20 years of experience and expertise in racer development and management of club programs, Wentworth is sure to continue to prosper, offering the highest quality of programs and services for its members. Club president, Brian Strecko is delighted with the news stating that “we are thrilled to have someone with Nigel’s extensive coaching background come back to his roots and rejoin the Wentworth team.” Strecko also points out that by investing in Nigel the Wentworth Ski Race Club is investing in its future. He explains “one of Nigel’s key goals is to redefine our program so that as each athlete grows, the necessary structures will be in place to support them for years to come.”

Nigel is to begin work immediately preparing for the season, with regular fall dryland training scheduled to begin this Sunday, September 17, 2006 in Halifax. A number of other events are to take place throughout the fall including the club’s annual fundraising “Ski Swap” slated for Sunday November 5th, once again at the Brewery Market in Halifax.
